Organization, from 09 to 20 August 2021 virtually, of the WiSci girls STEAM camp

The Girl Up Initiative of the United Nations Foundation, the United States Department of State, Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and Caterpillar, in close collaboration with the Moroccan Department of National Education, the Embassy of United States in Rabat and the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) Agencies of Morocco and Côte d'Ivoire, are organizing, from 09 to 20 August 2021 virtually, the WiSci girls STEAM camp, better known as the WiSci Camp - Women in Science Camp.

On this occasion, a hundred high school students from Morocco, Côte d'Ivoire and the United States will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) and experience mentorship opportunities from leaders at partner organizations.

Coming for the most part  from the high schools beneficiaries of the “Secondary Education” project under the “Compact II” cooperation programme funded by MCC, and aged 15 to 18, Moroccan students, and their Ivorian and American counterparts, will take part in an intensive training programme in STEAM, punctuated by the organization of several practical workshops (coding, biology, mapping and satellite imagery, geospatial information, etc.) led by national and international experts mobilized by partner organizations, such as Intel, TE Connectivity or Caterpillar.

The objectives of this training program are to equip the recipient students with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue and succeed in scientific careers, to develop their leadership potential, enable them to explore the use of technology for beneficial purposes and to be in contact with the professional world, and to promote intercultural communication and understanding.

Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s WiSci Camp will be held virtually through the means available to participating students, namely the tablets offered by TE Connectivity, tool kits and hardware provided by Intel and Internet connectivity provided by MCA Agencies of Morocco and Côte d'Ivoire.

The WiSci Camp is the result of a public-private partnership between leading players to reduce the gender gap that persists in STEAM. Since 2015, more than 800 girls from 20 countries have been successfully trained at WiSci Camps in Georgia, Estonia, Namibia, Malawi, Peru and Rwanda.

As a reminder, the WiSci Camp is part of the US government’s efforts to empower adolescent girls and promote innovation, technology, scientific leadership and training in STEAM, as well as the education of young girls.
